Artists of Highland Chiapas I

 

Antún Kojtom (b. 1969) is a Tzeltal Maya artist from the Municipio of Tenejapa, Chiapas. Largely self taught, he has participated in a number of Maya artist collectives. His work in graphic media, oil and mural has earned international recognition and mural commissions.

"Hubo para mí dos conquistas:

la conquista militar en 1500

y la conquista religiosa

que fue la más fuerte,

que nos destruyó, nuestro espíritu, así como nuestra cultura.

 

Y finalmente, la cultura que tenemos ahora es una cultura sincrético lo que nos ha confundido por mucho tiempo.

 

Y bueno, esta parte me parece ser mi trabajo como persona creativa.

A partir de aquí a comenzar y a poder construir y comprender de qué manera se fragmentó la memoria y la cultura de me gente.

Los motivos se enfocaron en la memoria del tzeltal maya de Tenejapa que me pareció muy interesante.

 

Comencé a trabajar en esta parte de la memoria porque creo que esta parte es donde podemos recrear una idea del rompecabezas después de la cultura maya tzeltal había sido fragmentada por la conquista."
